Aging mainliners and demographic destiny | The Christian Century

A "death tsunami" coming in mainline churches?
Don't manage your finances year by year. Make a major downsizing effort now, save your resources and plan for a "smaller, more vital" future.

  1. A "death tsunami" doesn't sound like a great thought for an Easter people, but the fact is that the Easter people I see in most churches are in that demographic he speaks of. Several years back I attended a 150th anniversary service for the D of Huron in London ON. We filled the local arena, but I couldn't help looking around and thinking, "ten years from now and half these folks will be dead". Perhaps that thought came from the Tempter, perhaps it's just prudent. Makes me think we need to go to the churches that have a healthy demographic mix, like the ANIC congregation St. Peter and St. Paul's (formerly St. George's) and ask what makes them differnet?
